charanam :

rajadhi   raja  rati   raja  sata  lavanya

puja  japamula  vela ponduga neduta

rajilli lokantaranga marmamu  delipi

raji seyu tyagaraja sannura  nidu

meaning:

It  is  of no avail  to live  a hundred  years  and  rule over the earth  without earning  your grace  . my life has meaning  only if you are  by my ide when iam engaged  in your worship and when i chant yuor names , you enlighten me on various  estoreic truths  underlying  creation . That  tygaraja  may be  alluding  to a  relatively  barren ,  unfulfilled  life of dasaratha  and  bharata , may not  be  a far fetched  assumption  .The  formaer  shed his  mortal coil  with not even  the felicity  of rama’s   benging  presence  by his side . As  for bharata , despite  kaikeyi’s unbecoming  act of exilling  rama and crowning  her own  offspring  king instead  , justice  seems to have  gone  the full circle  when the  noble brother  on his own  opted  to instal rama’s  sandals  on the  throne and to guide  the destiny  of ayodhya  as a caretaker  , operating miles way from the scene  .He  , too  lost out  on the crucial personal  day to day  contact  with rama  with  its  great  oppurtunities  for inner  evolution .

you are the   path  for the  plants to  draw  water from .  One  whom siva  the weaver  of the crescent   moon  on his head   worships  one  who  negates  the ill effects  of sins  of commission and  omission  ! you are the moon ‘s   rays  that cause  the  solar race   – friend of lotus – to rise  wave after wave  . Deluded  humans  get sidetracked from the   main pursuit  of  deliverance  by  rituals that yield  momentary   benefits  in place of lasting  redemption . oftentimes,  during  pursuit of  higher goals , one lands up  with less important  powers  that bestow temporary advantage These are dismissed by serious spiritual practitioners as inconsequential and even hinderances to achieving the ultimate goal  of self realisation  that they  have set themselves .

The  new   born baby  deer  fell  into  a  nearby lake  . sage  jadabharata  took pity  on the young  one and  tended  it with  deepest  involvement , regardless of his  compulsions  as  a  non  attached  renunciate  Again  vishnu  incarnated  as a tortoise  and bore  the  mandara  hill  on his back  when it  was  sinking  in the ocean  . yudhistra  ordered  his  brother  , bhima  to release  duryodhana  , a sworn  detractor  of the pandavas  , from  the  clutches  of his captor  , the gandharva citraratha  . It is a  trait  of nobility  to forgive  transgressions .   so  please  do not consider me an outsider  but rush  to save me  from the attrocities  perpetrated  by my  very  own  kith  and  kin  , O  , the best   among the royalty ! “.

“Auspicious rama  of unsullied character ! protect me  . You  are the  basis  of my  existence  . You are the  perennial  benefactor .  you  are the  outcome  of the  vows  i have observed  . you  are  my  physical strength  . you are  my inheritance  . you   sustain  the five marks  of a married woman’s  status , (aiduva) . you  are the bliss  that  fills  my heart . you  are the  talisman  that  protects me  . you have  conquered  m y  body and  soul  . you are  at the  root  of  my spirit  of renunciation  . you  constitute  my very   life  and  my  youthful spirit  . you are  the ultimate  significance  of sculptures . you are beyond the  ken of the evil  minded .  you sustain  the universe  . you are the   beauteous pearl  strings  that   devotees  wear , god of gods  , you are the  lion  that strikes  terror  in elephant like  sinful ,  evil  forces  . you are  unique  as the embodiment  of the  supreme  entity  . you are  the  immanent  everywhere  even in the ocean  . you are above  all  illusions .

in  the true   mystic tradition  , Tyagaraja  dons the role  of a  heroine  languishing  for   her  life partner  . the five signs  of a  married woman   the mangala sutra ,  th vermillion spot on the forehead  , smearing  of turmeric  paste on the body  , bangles ,  earing s are alluded  to here  in the  word “aiduva ”  . Even as  a supportive  husband  is indispensable for a  woman’s well being  , the saint  draws a  parallel  with himself  in need  of his  lord’s  tangible  support  for his own  sustenance .  The words  ” subha akaramu  ” , “durjana abhavamu ” , “papebha simhamu”  (intimidating  presence  of a lion before an   elephant  )  and  sagara  guptamu  (unfathomable  as the ocean ) are felicitious  expressions .
